Ron de Jeremy is proof that surprises come in all sorts of packages. When this rum was announced a lot of people groaned and wondered if it was for real. A company called “One Eyed Spirits” was producing Ron de Jeremy Rum. Then more information came out and my curiosity was piqued. Two guys from Finland dreamed it up while in Amsterdam and had recruited Ron Jeremy and Cuban Master Distiller Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez. My expectations went from being a tad wary to hopeful.
Appearance/Presentation
The bottle has a tapestry colored label front and back with a sketch of Ron Jeremy top and center on the front; Ron de Jeremy “the adult Rum” with the RJ emblem lower center. The RJ emblem is repeated on the neck foil and top of the bottle. The back label has a wonderful sexual innuendo loaded statement guaranteed to make you smile, if not outright laugh. One last surprise: Each bottle is numbered. Mine is 06791. In the bottle and the glass the dark amber rum had good clarity and after a swirl revealed thick legs down the side of the glass.
Nose
Popping the cork on the bottle immediately released the floral smell of cane, vanilla, caramel and oak. After it settled in the glass the banana, coconut, and spice aromas rose from the glass. After I let the glass breathe I discovered that the all of the aromas balanced out with a little hint of cane around the edges.
Palate
As the rum touches the palate the wave of vanilla and caramel wash over the tongue. Quick impressions of banana, anise, tobacco, char flash and settle then a nice smoky coconut note arrives easing into a spicy finish. The alcohol nips around the edges but never overwhelms the flavor of the rum. As I drink the glass the coconut impression eases into the finish lending to the spiciness of the fading flavor.
Review
Take away the marketing machine, the fun sexual innuendos, and in the glass I think you will find a good rum. I added a little water to it and found it smoothed the sharp flavor notes and blended the fruity notes nicely. I would not hesitate using this in any recipe calling for gold rum. Distribution at this time is a little limited so you may want to check with your online retailers if it is not available in your area. At 30 dollars a bottle is a great value and well worth the investment.
