 Many moons ago my wife and I began hosting an annual Tiki Party. This event is what eventually put me on the path to exploring rums. Later it would be rum that returned part of my focus back to Tiki and my involvement with the Fraternal Order of Moai. Tiki is an classic American made phenomenon that has captured the imaginations of people from around the world.
It all began with Donn the Beachcomber in the 1950's and has waxed and waned over the years. Currently the world is experiencing a bit of a global renaissance where familiar classics are side by side with new inventions. I encourage you to visit Latitude 29 in New Orleans, Smugglers Cove in San Francisco, Longitude in Oakland, and Three Dots and a Dash as well as Lost Lake in Chicago to witness this first hand. To get a taste of the past on the East Coast check out the Mai-Kai in Fort Lauderdale and Trader Vic's in Atlanta. On the West Coast explore Tonga Hut, Tiki-Ti, and Don the Beachcombers for new and classic experiences. I believe part of the appeal is that it harkens back to a simpler time, when the world was a much larger place. The innovation of the Tiki cocktail broke away from the classics and gave people the freedom to explore and invent making it the Grandfather of the modern "mixology" movement we see today. Whatever guides you to the bar or back yard party. Drop anchor, relax, stay a while and most of all enjoy. Your personal Tiki adventure awaits. |
