Brugal 1888

I first tried this rum in November 2011 while on the Rum Renaissance Cruise. To my knowledge it has been quite some time since Brugal released a new rum and some anticipation had built up among rum enthusiasts about what 1888 would bring to the table.  Right out of the gate 1888 distinguishes itself from the other Brugal rums.  The bottle shape is squared off, tapering to the curve of the bottle.  Instead of the label we are used to seeing, this one is screened directly onto the bottle with two paper labels on the front and back.  The dark amber color has a rich coppery hue in the bottle and in the glass. The thin legs ease slowly down the side of the glass.

Nose

I immediately pick up hints of sweet grass.  After it breathes for a few minutes I pick up vanilla and cocoa as well.

Palate

Rich caramel dances across the tongue carrying the rest of the flavors around the mouth.  This is very smooth rum with only the slightest of burns around the edges.  The cocoa and coffee notes blend to give it the classic mocha or macchiato as the caramel carries the flavor.  As I sipped on the drink for over 10 minutes I detected a slight hint of sherry in the finish.   The finish is pleasant with no burn.

Review

Brugal 1888 is a blend of 5 to 14 year old rums dual aged first in American white oak then in Spanish Oak barrels.  It was created to celebrate the 120 years experience of the Brugal family of master rum makers. From the nose to the finish I am very pleased with every aspect of this rum.  The blenders at Brugal created something extra special

This is fine rum at a great price point.  I highly recommend picking up a bottle (or two).
