We first encountered Alma De Bohemio (Bohemian Soul) in their booth at the 2012 Miami Rum Renaissance Festival. We shared a wonderful conversation about Panama, their rums, and honey. Due to friends who work with bees all over the Southeast region of the United States, we are always curious to know where honey for a product is sourced. Interestingly enough, the owner claimed the honey for this rum is sourced on-site at hives around their sugar cane fields. We have made inquiries to verify this but have not been able to substantiate this. The rum is aged 8 years in oak casks and blended before bottling.
Appearance/Presentation
This 750 ML bottle is slightly shorter than others on the shelf. The clear label is centered below the embossed Bohemio crest with an orange circle with a bee and honey comb noting that the rum is aged eight years in oak. The label also states that Caramel color is added. I find this interesting since most companies add Caramel coloring for consistency but their honesty in the matter is appreciated.
The liquid reminds me of the rich amber you find in jewelry. Gold shimmers through the bottle as I pour the liquid into the glass. The color shifts slightly in the glass becoming translucent in the glass.
Nose
It is no surprise that honey is the dominant scent of the rum. Once the glass breathes you can pick up subtle floral notes in the undertones.
Palate
The liquid envelops the tongue and I am surprised at how the honey carries and balances the rum. The sweetness is balanced by hints of smoky oak and flora. The floral notes carry the finish as the honey flavor dissipates.
Review
Right now you cannot walk into a liquor store without encountering a Honey version of an alcohol. The ability of honey to smooth the rough edges of other spirits had me curious as to how it would play with rum and its inherent sweet notes. Alma De Bohemio Honey rum is a lovely smooth product that balances the sweetness of the honey with the earthiness of the oak and char.
This is a fun addition to the market place and has inspired creative experimentation to play with the flavor notes. While we were reviewing the rum we came up with this cocktail for your enjoyment.
